Political evolution has relied on the population’s unwillingness to think about serious issues.

By keeping the masses, by turns, entertained or depressed, thanks to austerity or war, the Establishment have managed to spoon-feed them a diet of light entertainment and processed convenience foods. Usually the two combine very nicely as people can keep their eyes glued to the TV while shovelling something un-nutritious of dubious provenance into their face.
